Palestra (Penitent-Patera) 1986-2015

Palestra at the Polish National Show
Palestra at the Polish National Show

On the 24th of January 1986 a grey filly was born at Michalow Stud and she was given the name Palestra. She was a daughter of 1985 Polish National Champion Stallion and 1987 European Champion Stallion Penitent (Partner-Penza) and out of the Bandos-daughter Patera (out Platyna/Czardasz). She would turn out to be the best daughter kept in Polish breeding of her charismatic sire. Although Palestra´s dam Patera and granddam Platyna both had good race records (Patera raced 2 seasons with 11 starts – 1xI, 4xIII, 1xI and Platyna raced 16 times during 2 seasons – 3xI, 3xII, 4xIII, 3xIV), Palestra never raced before she was put into breeding. Throwback Thursday…

Without doubt the most world-wide influential Swedish-bred mare exported to USA has been Edjora, the dam of 1982 US National Champion Mare Kajora (by Kaborr) and granddam of World Champion Stallion Gazal Al Shaqab (by Anaza El Farid). Edjora was a great producer in USA, but not everyone know that before she was exported in 1972 she left one daughter in Sweden by the Swedish National Champion Stallion Espartero (Nabor-Ela) and this only daughter created her own dynasty… Continue reading “TBT – Wiewiorka, the Swedish-bred daughter of the great Edjora”

The legacy of Wizja – her first daughter Wizjera

Wizjera1992
Wizjera (Tallin-Wizja/El Paso) at Michalów in 1992

After 5 colts the great Wizja finally had a daughter in 1988, the chestnut Wizjera. She was by the Russian stallion Tallin (Nabeg-Talantlivaia/Aswan). He was used at Tersk in 1984-1985 siring 13 foals before he arrived in Poland for an exchange with the Probat-son Gwizd. Tallin was a representative of the Bairactar sire line and his greatest achievement was his son Wojslaw (out of Wilejka – the fullsister to Wizja). He matched very well with the Szweykowska-line through Warmia producing Wilnianka (out of Wilejka) – 1989 Polish National Junior Reserve Champion Mare, Warsowia (out of Wendeta/Palas) – the dam of Polish Chief sire Wachlarz (by Arbil), Warsowia was sold to Lenita Perroy where she has been a very valued broodmare. Tallin is also the sire of Dzida (out of Debica/Elf) – 1988 Polish National Junior Reserve Champion Mare. Continue reading “The legacy of Wizja – her first daughter Wizjera”

Happy Birthday Ganges 20 years!

Ganges77web

Some horses will make an impression on you that will last a lifetime and for me that horse is Ganges. For me he is an example of the perfect stallion – he won at the Racetrack, he won in performance and he won in the showring. He has the greatest disposition and he is strong and correct. All those features are great, but even greater is that his offspring inherit those features, over and over and over again. And for me, THAT is the proof of a great stallion, a stallion that will matter for the breed and that will be remembered not only by people like myself that love them for who they are, but also by breeders in the future that will value them for what they have passed on and for bringing the breed forward. And Ganges is definitely one of those. 20 years ago, on the 6th of April 1994, this wonderful stallion was born at Michalów stud in Poland and today we celebrate his 20th Birthday. Happy Birthday beautiful boy! Continue reading “Happy Birthday Ganges 20 years!”

Ararat (Palas x Arra/Bandos) – 29 years old!

Ararat in 2011

One of my favorite mares in the 1980´s was the amazing Arra (Bandos x Arba/Comet), Triple Crown winner (Derby, Oaks and Criteriewinner) as well as 1983 European Champion Mare and 1986 Polish National Champion Mare, a fleabitten mare with huge black eyes, a beautiful head with a great neck and lot of charisma – a classical Polish mare that showed that a beautiful horse also could do well in racing/performance.
